Vogel State Park

I mistakenly put this post on Leah's blog so I'm moving it here. Yikes! My brain scares me sometimes.

We had great fun this weekend camping in North GA. Leah is eagerly awaiting her turn on the computer and I have a picnic dinner to pack so This will be mostly pictures with a few comments. We headed up on Friday with the Coopers and Smiths for a weekend of fun.
The creek that runs through the campsite was the highlight of our trip and the thing the kids looked forward to the most. Well, maybe s'mores were first on their brain but the creek was the first place they headed once they were all finally released from the car ride up the mountain.

Ashlynn was the most fought over child this weekend. All the older kids were vying for time with her in their lap. They all got it at one point or another and she, of course, ate up all the attention. She is such a doll!
Everyone had a to-do list. Paddle boats, s'mores, putt-putt, fishing, s'mores, relaxing, picture taking, s'mores, creek wading, songs by the campfire, s'mores... You get the idea. In the short time we were the we were able to hit all those activities although not everyone did them all together.

Notice that Jeff is taking a nice break. Leah and Emma are up front paddling like crazy and loving it. In his defense, he did get up front and do more than his share of paddling.

Putt-putting wasn't a favorite for everyone so Jeff and Ty took the kids that wanted to go. Scott and Lacy went fishing and the ladies relaxed at the campsite and prepped dinner.

True to form we ate well this weekend. Kathy and Scott did grilled pork tenderloin on Friday night and man was that good! We did hobo meals in the coals and the kids "roasted" their hot dogs over the fire on Saturday night. They didn't seem to care that we pre-cooked them on the camp stove so they wouldn't take so long. They loved any opportunity to gather around the fire ring. Saturday night the older kids got to build the fire from the leftover dinner coals. When they got their first flame they shouted and jumped up and down. They were so proud of themselves! It was the first time we let them poke the fire with sticks and really work to get it going. We have a bunch of pyromaniacs on our hands.

It was a great trip. Of course, there was rain. There is always rain when we all go camping together. We thought we had dodged the bullet this trip when we stayed dry all day on Friday despite cloudy skies. Right before we went to bed that night it started to drizzle and we scurried to get all the chairs and gear stowed. It rained off and on all night but by morning there was little moisture left on the ground. What sounded like a downpour inside the tent ended up being sporadic drizzles. Saturday was absolutely gorgeous and we went to bed thinking we might get some rain today but that maybe we'd get lucky and it would hold off until the afternoon. We were wrong! We woke up to thunder and lightening. I have never seen a campsite break down so quickly. We woke a little before 7 and by 8 we had it all in the van. Amazing! It did start raining before we were done but the trees kept it from getting too heavy. We were home by 10 and had the whole day ahead of us. The gear is now stowed, the boys are napping (Theo crawled up in my lap while I was typing and immediately fell asleep. He's now on the sofa getting some much needed rest.), the tent has been rinsed and is drying out in the back yard (oh man! the pollen was awful!), and Leah and I are enjoying some quiet time. I'd better run. She's itching to make sure her virtual critter isn't dead and I have a meal to prep. Our end of the year party for the home school group is tonight and we have to leave soon! Yikes!!

What a fun adventure! How did Leah's ears fare on the mountain? :-)

Going up was pretty rough. Her ears were making her pretty uncomfortable and she was getting pretty carsick- to the point of getting "the bag" ready. On the trip up to Brasstown Bald we grabbed Emma as a distraction. She didn't like the pressure but she didn't make a big deal out of it. I'm pretty convinced she is really experiencing discomfort but that some days there is a bigger show than others. :-)
